Karen Nicole Costa: Am I The 1%?
Am I in the 1% because I have healthcare, no debt (because I chose to go to school where I got a full academic scholarship and I have never created a credit card balance that I could not pay for), have a 401K, and make more than I “need” just because I don’t live beyond my means?
I once had to work three jobs to pay for my apartment and food when I was in college. I worked in a restaurants so that I wouldn’t have to pay a lot for food. I have given up some of my dreams because financial security, health insurance, and benefits are important to me. I am good at my job and I work 80+ hours a week sometimes. I am thankful for everything that I have. I will always have to work and that’s okay. I will have to put my children in daycare. I clip coupons. I buy things on sale. I save up for the splurge purchases I want to make, and I do not feel entitled to anything.
My parents taught me to value money, to appreciate the things I have, and never spend more than I make. If you consider me to be in the 1%, it is because I have made the choice to be there.
Amen to this! My thoughts exactly!
